FOOTNOTES The Submariner reference 1680 was launched in 1966 as the first Rolex Submariner example to be offered with a calendar. Advertised as 'The Diver's Friend' and available from 1967 until 1974 with the Submariner text in red the model has become among collectors as the 'Eric Clapton' Submariner after the famous musician wore an example on his album cover Riding With The King During the first three years of production from 1967 until 1970 the depth rating was printed as 200m=660ft, in 1970 Rolex conformed to the American standard and reversed the print to read 660ft=200m. Examples of the first series of red Submariner are particularly rare and desirable due to their limited production and relatively short manufacture period. It is interesting to note that the big-brother to the Red Submariner, the Double Red SeaDweller was available with red printed text until 1977, three years after the Submariner text had been altered to white. Although no longer offered for sale Rolex catalogues continued to illustrate the Red Submariner until 1979more
