“I was about nine and my aunt sent me a little lap steel with an amp – I guess it appealed to her. So I learned to play it, then my folks gave me an old Kay they found somewhere – I had that until I was 14 or 15. Then I bought a Les Paul Goldtop in 1954," says Duane, in Music Radar's [article](http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/52-famous-players-on-their-first-guitars-428577/4).more
"The lead guitarist for Howlin Wolf was Hubert Sumlin. Hubert played a Les Paul a lot during this time, but it may also be a Strat or something else. I have seen him pictured with lots of different guitars. He plays without a pick and that is part of his tone. He also would have used Tweed Fender amps, early Gibson amps, or Valco amps. The reverb you hear is probably from the room it was recorded in. Most guys today use an outboard Fender Reverb unit to try to capture it. Louis Electric is making a Hubert Sumlin amp to capture this tone. If you want to capture it, most small tube amps from the 50's will get that tone. I like the Valco amps from that period. You need to turn up the amp all the way, the turn down the guitars volume to clean it up. The amps treble will be set high and the tone knob on the guitar will also be rolled back a little. This will get you started. It will take a long time to master." http://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/howlin-wolf-tone.688173/more
Along with his Gibson Les Paul Standard, he also brought this guitar on the tour, mostly for the 1st album of NGHFB, but it was also seen in "Chasing Yesterday" tour. The first documented electric guitar Buddy Holly owned was a Gibson Les Paul with a gold top. Though Buddy might have had a more inexpensive model electric guitar prior to the Les Paul, Buddy probably used this guitar when he and Bob Montgomery were performing on the radio and around Lubbock in order to give them a more electric country sound, not to mention to compliment the R&B numbers they were throwing into their set by 1955.more

Lenny praises his 1959 model of this guitar in his [*Guitar world* interview](http://www.guitarworld.com/dear-guitar-hero-lenny-kravitz-talks-vintage-gear-let-love-rule-and-new-album-strut): "What gear did you use on Strut? — Josh Lind 'It was very simple. I only used two guitars. One was a ’59 Les Paul 'Goldtop' that’s really muted and faded and has the most brilliant-sounding PAFs I’ve ever heard.'"more
"Tone first of all. I don't use them the same way most people use them: as a solo instrument. I tend to be more chord oriented. But those pickups have a nice, warm, chordal feeling. You can get all the harmonics and stuff out without being too overdriven. And I just like thinking about whoever owned this thing in 1954 or 1955."more

In [this interview](http://www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/aaron-lewis-0820.aspx) with Gibson, Aaron Lewis says, "And then, the next one I would run in after would be my 1957 Gold Top, that was Jimmy Ripp’s guitar before I bought it, and he used it live on pretty much all of the Mick Jagger solo touring. The guitar has been on, like, 45 different records over the years, recording-wise. I think the last record it was on before I acquired it was the last Jerry Lee Lewis record. I have had a lot of people play that guitar through clean amps, through dirty amps, and everything in between, and the response from just about everyone is that is the best-sounding Les Paul they have ever heard. It’s just a beast when you put it through distortion and, man, if you plug it into an old Vox AC30 or an old Fender, the clean tone that you get out of it is ridiculous."more

Lanois doesn’t prefer a particular brand of string, just as long as they’re heavy. Currently, his gauges go from .011–.056 with a wound 3rd string."more
