I'm not a mic expert by any means, but I have tried several other mics and my MXL V69 Mogami tube mic records vocals and acoustic guitar better than most. There is a definite warmth to it, and the sound isolation is great.
regardless of how much the 12at7 tube in this mic matters, the sound is very good. Top end is clear, with a certain airiness, but siblance is very well under control. low end is full and round but not boomy, unless you consciously want to take advantage of the proximity effect that all cardioid mics have.
I have had great results on both male and female vocals. My recommendation is to record with a pop filter in and about 30 cm of distance from sound source.
Rear rejection is quite good, though not as good as some dynamic mics. Capturing from the side has has very little deviation form front.
