I've gotta add that the EQ section has turned out to be largely transparent & musical. It's a bit impractical still but if you've got a history of working on a proper desk you could find this useful.
That said I recommend going into Console options & turning off the parts you're not using as not to chew up your DSP.
The rest of the review stands w/ the exception that I'm actually using more tho but rarely so far...might get more play in the future.
BUYER BE AWARE!!! The ONLY WAY to use the UAD Unison plugins is to print with them ("monitor mode is basically a hustle). It's a myth that you can get the same effect in post.. They've completely avoided this & very deblirately...Fucking evil. Really dishonest. If you employ them them post tracking, you get a FAR weaker "emulation". So on there Unison Channel strips. Are you good with printing gain, eq, (ok so far) but compression & gate? That's ok, time to time but in general? It's a skechy proposition. I'm Totally fine with it but they buried the info in a very deliberate fashion. It's like working in the real world of tracking (not in a DAW) & yet imply that you can get the same emulation in post. No, you can't. U gotta use"Console" & print those emulations to get the full effect of their emulation. PLEASE! Tell your friends etc, cuz I had to fight to confirm this shit out this until I got a straight answer from a disgruntled UAD employee.
Onto this particular plug it. Crazy how modern of a sound I get from it. I've used a ton of Neve desks but not this one. The channel strip is crazy powerful (gain, dynamics, eq, gates, etc)...I gotta say for the "punchy/modern" sound, I would rather go SSL OR API. This thing is wicked good but...yeah. SSL or API just feel like they did it better. I'm a gear dork so yes-I have it, but struggle to remember the last time I used it. That said it is amazing...but gimme an SSL/API, and I'm happy.
Parting thought-I've used a "real" SSL/API so I could be biased. Try it for yourself but know it a bit of a scham. The modeling is based on actual changes to the impedance, etc as you record. In post its more like a ghost of it original self. On the other hand-gain, comp/expander/gate/eq that's a lotta bang for the buck. Demo it & let your ears decide. If I'm truely honest? Should have spent that money elsewhere...even tho it is bitchin.
