Each separate string is a different MIDI channel. So if you have a sound module that responds to any MIDI channel globally, this will work ok. If you have a multi-timbral instrument, then each string will be a different instrument. Of course, you can always use something to re-route MIDI data to the proper channels. Also, the buttons are not velocity sensitive, though the strings are. I use this as a MIDI controller in certain situations. As for the built in sounds, they are pretty generic. But that's not really an issue for this device's original purpose, which is as a learning device.
