Distortion and saturation play a very important role in music production. From subtle, clean and warm tube or tape saturation to the wildest multi-band guitar amp effects: FabFilter Saturn delivers!
For Periphery 3, Nolly used the Fabfilter Saturn to act as the distortion stage in his bass tone. Nolly commonly builds his entire bass tone in 'the box' (DAW) and utilises EQ, compression, distortion and bass cab impulse responses to build his tone, all before moving onto making it fit into his mix. His settings will typically be the following: Band 1 (0Hz-275Hz) - Bypass Band 2 (275Hz-20KHz) - Heavy Saturation - Mix at 80% - Feedback / Frequency at 0% - Dynamics at 50% - Drive at 75% - Tone left flat - Level at 0dB (no boost or cut)more
Quote (at 9:20) : " [...] Actually the sound that comes from the Synthesizer is not that big, the way we work is to process it a lot after it comes out of the Synthesizer, you know, make a compression, make saturation with **Saturn** from **Fabfilter**, make some Equalization, but most of them is the saturation from the **Fabfilter Saturn** [...] "more
Saturation I can actually use. I've got 3 go to saturation plugs & this is by far the most versatile. Being able to do band specific distortion is what is missing on my other favorites. Thermonic Culture Vulture is great but it's a bit of a hammer.
This can be as subtle or as gnarly as you like. Makes it very handy.
That said it's not like hitting tape. Nothing is.
When I need tape saturation, I hit tape.
Dunno why "tape" plugins are so popular...
Go to a goodwill, get a tape deck of some kind- reel to reel, cassette & hit tape if that's what you want. Likely cheaper than the plugin your buying. Just requires a bit of thought.
We love all fabfilter plugins, and their saturn is perfect to distort, saturate, basses and synths. Nos encanta los plugins de fabfilter y saturn es un buen distorsionador y saturador,
Great as a utility for making peaks behave, but even better creatively for just completely mashing whatever it's fed. Great for distortion with character rather than just a noise blitzkrieg, very easy to dial in a tailor-made custom bite. Perfect for more industrial styles of electronica like Gary Numan and NIN and depeche Modes current 2019 sound. I have other saturation plugs such as Izotope Trash and some Nomad Factory stuff, but Saturn feels much more robust, like its encased in Kevlar . A veritable snarling beast. Loving it !!
The only thing i'd like is the fullscreen capability found on the pro Q 3 and Pro MB, but that would be nitpicking. Can't fault the sound at all. Awesome comes as standard for any fabfilter plugin.
My absolute favorite distortion plugin since the simple Camel Crusher and Sausage Fattener. This is a plugin that distorts without making an ugly useless sound. I find it useful simply for warming up a sound as well, but I primarily use it for its unique distortions.

Saturn is actually my backup distortion behind Trash 2 and Ableton's Saturator, but it has proven itself useful many different times.
The multi-band controls are the best I've ever used and can be such a relief to use an plugin with an interface that is this easy to navigate.
