moreVintage Moog sound, in a completely reimagined machine.
The Sub Phatty takes everything that is vintage Moog, and packs it into a sound design machine that is both fresh and aggressive. It has 25 keys, 31 knobs and 13 switches that connect you directly to the analog heart of this powerful instrument. Its oscillators have been designed to perform with unmatched clarity and accuracy in any environment with no warm-up time necessary. They are fat, punchy and loaded with harmonic content.
A new Multidrive circuit in the filter section totally transforms the sound of this analog synthesizer into a screaming beast. Create gritty attack, asymmetrical distortion, and saturated hard-clipping sounds that tear through the densest mix.
The mixer section houses a powerful square wave sub oscillator designed to add depth, thickness and side splitting bass to any sound. In addition to this, a specially voiced noise generator has been incorporated for sculpting hard hitting, all analog percussion sounds and other sound effects.
The Sub Phatty joins the Moog arsenal with a new and boldly unique voice. Its engaging and dynamic interface fuses a connection between man & machine that opens the door to unprecedented sonic exploration.
a moog that sounds like its been thru post production before you even hit record! the keyboard sucks, but its MIDI capable so who cares. This synth is one of the ebst sounding new analogs out there and I am so glad I bit the bullet. Good for more than basses though I haven't used it for anything but bass yet in a recording. I only dock this synth a star for the cheesey keyboard.
This synth is outstanding. It can be tricky to be subtle with it, as it'll rip your head off. But if you're looking for some proper old- school-ballsy-moog bass, this synth is the one for you.
The first move you make when you're playing the Sub Phatty, is to grab that multi-drive knob, and crank it. Pull down the OSC1 and OSC2, and bump a little SUB OSC. Delicious, right? Well if you haven't gotten your hands on the SUB Phatty yet, you need to hear these unique timbres that shine on this synth. Deep, heavy, and gritty, but go up a couple octaves, and you'll notice this synth has a sort of finess you might not expect at first, but will love at first listen. Underpriced for the Moog standard that never fails to impress. Oh! And don't forget the free amazing software editor and librarian that work wonders for the workflow.
I have used this moog for about a year now and all I can say is, it's so much better than any keyboard and synth combo can ever achieve, due to its perfect analog sound! If you are in need of a analog bass sound, you have found the right machine.
Contrary to Moog's marketing, the Sub Phatty doesn't go very far into gritty territory; its overdrive is much tamer than, say, a MiniBrute. However, it does indeed have the exalted Moog sound, which, while limited, is worth the price of admission (along with the synth's high build quality). Those worried about the hidden functions should note that few of them are settings that one would fiddle with regularly. USB/MIDI integration is excellent.
I would say that it sounds dirtier than a model D all things being equal... I have a sub phatty and a model D clone and the Phatty is capable of a much grittier sound with no external processing.
The Moog Sub Phatty is one of my favourite Instruments in my Set-Up. I use it for deep Bass-Lines to create a shocking and punching bass sound together with a bass player. But even in the high notes, the Sub Phatty can be used to create synth-solo sounds, which is very nice if you ask me. The whole Instrument is very easy to handle if you can relate to basics of synthesizer electronics and techniques. A must have for all the key-playing-mad-scientists out there ^
Really getting into synth and keys taking 5 keys to gigs now MADDENING
Super phat sound, used several times in a live set-up and for studio production. Great piece of gear.
I love every sound I get from this but if you aren't trying to plug it in via USB and use the file manager and vst version to change things like the bend range you're going to find yourself wondering how to count 24 vs 25 while hoping you remembered the right button combo. The Sub 37 fixes a lot of this but I feel like I'm seeing a lot of these below Lil Phatty Stage prices despite it being a more competent synth. Not great at farty Moog tones because the whole Multidrive/Resonance interaction is all MS20 style roughness or TB303 bite. It's bright rather than warm and it knocks but you won't get classic Minimoog Funk basses out of it in the same variety as a Voyager because it's a different beast. You'll get similar tones, but once pushed they howl.
This is one of my favorite synths right now, the sound is amazing and it is small and compact so I can take it wherever I am and make really nice sounds easily.
I love to use it for baselines mainly since it ssooo deep and fat!
mooooooooooooooooog
I have really enjoyed working with this piece of hardware a lot. I'm still working on developing custom patches for it, and using Moog's Librarian VST to back them up and push them. Almost have it automatically changing patches as I move through live sets at this point. ;)
Time is the true measure of how good your Moog is. Sub Phatty seems to age exceptionally well so far. It’s modern hard edge sound and envelopes coupled with vintage Moog modulation and silky cream as fuck filter makes it an excellent go to for immediate punch on bass or leads.
With all that said this little bastard also has flexibility and synthesis surprises if you dig further into the non-labeled options. I thought when I bought a Grandmother my sub phatty was doomed to be sold, but to Moog’s credit it still has a character to it that you wouldn’t even get from another Moog. Also I originally saw it’s small amount of presets as a detractor, but it actually changed me as an artist into being more open to organic creation(or you can set up more presets in the sub phatty app on your computer if you’re not looking to make that journey). I expect that 10 years from now sub phatty will be considered a unique piece of monstrous work in the history of Moog pantheons.
To make sounds...
So easy to use, so straightforward..and yet...a beast!! when it comes to sound and flexibility. Totally in love with my Sub Phatty
My Moog Source only can hold 16 presets at a time. I bought this as a backup, and felt that with new cheap memory space this baby could hold a few more presets at one time.
Say hello to the Sub Phatty, the grittiest Moog Synth ever.
Moog Music’s engineers have crafted the Sub Phatty’s oscillators to perform with extreme accuracy and require almost no warm-up time. Just power up, dial in your settings, and put your fingers to work on the keys to summon crisp and detailed waveforms, a vibrant and articulate sound that more than honors the rich sonic density synonymous with Moog creations.
The Sub Phatty is the first analog synth to feature Moog’s transformative new Multidrive section; at low settings Multidrive adds warmth and girth, but when pushed, it delivers a screaming snarl that is highly reactive to resonance, waveshape, and oscillator level. Experiment with this new circuit and unlock an undiscovered world of vivid analog tonalities.
The mixer section offers innovations of its own, including a sub oscillator that outputs a square wave one octave below Oscillator 1. Use this powerful tool as a third oscillator for added depth, or to craft your own customized incarnation of monstrous Moog bass. Also in the mixer section is a noise generator voiced to deliver low-frequency content, rich with body and punch. If your goal is to sculpt analog percussion and sound effects, look no further.
The Sub Phatty features a wide range of parameters just below the surface, and all features are easily accessible from the instrument’s front panel, or via the free standalone/plugin editor. Select filter poles, assign wave mod destinations, or specify pitch bend amounts — it’s all there.
The Sub Phatty brings a fearless new voice to the Moog family of synthesizers. With its streamlined interface and dynamic sound design flexibility, this new synth fuses an unparalleled connection between human & machine, opening the door to unprecedented sonic exploration.
Legend sound
Really good monophonic synth. Sounds really good and the sounds have a lot of "bite" that software synths often lack.
This synth is great. It has all the necessary equipment that a synth would need. I would just like if it had a Sequencer or arpeggiator.
Wait, a sequencer? But, but... but, Rory, its a moog... my inner purist is freaking out right now. Time to call my therapist.
YES YES YES

Gotta upgrade to the Sub 37 ;) All the controls right on the face rather than having to hit shift keys.
I was thinking 37 originally but also wanted an ARP to fill the role my 80s Oberheim performed before I sold it in a huff last year... since I already have the Phatty and am quite happy with it even though all the controls do double duty I decided to pounce on a used Studio Electronics SE1 on ebay instead of trading the Phatty in as a downpayment on the 37. Maybe I'll upgrade eventually, but I feel like I will get a lot more versatility out of a minimoog based rack unit with all those tweakable controls and every minimoog modification known to man built right in coupled with the sub phatty's unique take on the 2osc moog prodigy sound. Keep in mind I have a lot of other synths at this point, two 303 clones, volca bass, Casio CZ and my old workhorses the DX7, ESQ1 and MKS50... I'll write a detailed review of the SE1 when it arrives. I'm pretty excited about it. Its funny, I don't use that many analogs in any given production, I really lean hard on the 3 old digitals and do a lot of sample manipulation.
