Very nice distortion
Some might say that the Rat 2 doesn't sound like the original and then go a tirade on how in a bar 30 years ago they heard it for the first time and that the Rat 2 doesn't sound like "woodcutter" and precede to not remember what they had for breakfast. It's a nice distortion, overdrive sometimes, fuzzy/ wooly even, obviously you're not going to be rocking the heaviest metal in the world but it does have a nice kick when you need it.
Unbelievably versatile and mouth-watering.
The first time I ever plugged this pedal in and started playing, I felt so shook more than any other time in my life, because I have never heard such a deadly and poisonous and heavy distortion pedal that can also be used as an overdrive or fuzz. The sound this produces is just evil. Everybody should have one.
Maybe the ultimate distortion
I always thought it was sort of weird that ProCo never made any pedals that weren't RAT variations, but it makes sense now that I have one: you've pretty much made the ultimate distortion, so what's the need in doing anything else?
I've owned a Boss OS-2 and an EHX Big Muff Nano and, for some reason or another, found them lacking as distortions. I'd go to what felt like excruciating lengths to tweak the knobs and never find a setting I was completely happy with. Even though I'd advise against cutting too much high-end, it's stunningly easy to find good tones with a RAT. It also rewards knob-tweaking in ways that I felt the previous pedals didn't: it works as a drive but you can also max out the distortion to get a wonderfully vicious fuzz. I'm not at the point in my gear collecting where I buy different versions of the same pedal, but I could definitely see myself doing that with the RAT.
Favorite distortion circuit
Throw a good overdrive in front of this distortion and you've got yourself a crunchy, nice distortion if you dial it in right. The filter knob is also great because you can go from a cleaner refined distortion to more of a fuzz sound.
everyone needs a rat
not quite as buttery a my 80s rat. but if this is what you can get? worth it
