A compressor is a tool, u can use it to achieve better recorded sessions, focussing yourself in the feeling you let there than the technical part (so overrated above). Moreover, the ideal comp will help you with the sustain too. Basically, is great using it to play in public or record, only for practice could be kind of useless.
