About

Black Flower is a dynamic five-piece ensemble rooted in the vibrant city of Brussels, Belgium, known for their eclectic blend of jazz, nu jazz, and Ethiopian jazz. Formed in 2014, the group comprises Nathan Daems (saxophone, ney, kaval), Jon Birdsong (cornet, conch shells), Simon Segers (drums), Filip Vandebril (bass, bass VI), and Karel Cuelenaere (keys). Black Flower's music is a rich tapestry of global sounds, weaving together influences from diverse traditions to create a sound that is both exploratory and grounded in the jazz idiom.

How to Sound Like Black Flower

To evoke the serpentine mélange that characterizes Black Flower’s sound, musicians should focus on crafting a texturally rich and rhythmically intricate sonic palette. The group's music often features rolling, polyrhythmic drum patterns and breathy, melodic wind instruments, achieved through the use of traditional flutes like the ney and kaval, alongside the innovative use of cornet and conch shells. Psychedelic sequences and blurred arrangements suggest a reliance on effects like analog delay and reverb to create a sense of space and movement. The bass lines are fluid and dynamic, frequently utilizing a bass VI for added versatility, while the keys provide harmonic depth and atmospheric layers. To capture their sound, aim for a vibrant yet organic mix, with a focus on balancing melodic improvisation and rhythmic complexity.
