About

Cake Like is a New York City-based art-pop trio known for their distinctive blend of riot grrrl ethos and humorous, offbeat lyrics. Formed in 1993, the band comprises Kerri Kenney (vocals, bass), an accomplished comedian known for her work on shows like The State and Viva Variety; Nina Hellman (guitar), whom Kenney met at New York University's Experimental Theater Wing; and Jody Seifert (drums). Despite initially having no experience with their instruments, the trio quickly made a mark with their debut album Delicious, released on John Zorn's Avant label. Their subsequent releases, including Bruiser Queen and Goodbye, So What, further established their quirky, punk-inspired sound.

How to Sound Like Cake Like

Cake Like’s sound is characterized by a raw, lo-fi aesthetic that captures the energetic and unpolished spirit of the riot grrrl movement. Their music often features jangly, overdriven guitar riffs and punchy, straightforward drumming, creating a dynamic backdrop for Kenney's expressive and often satirical vocal delivery. To replicate their sound, musicians might employ fuzz pedals to add gritty texture to the guitar, while using basic drum kits to maintain the minimalist, garage band vibe. The bass lines, typically simple yet driving, complement the band's playful yet rebellious tone. Emphasizing DIY production techniques and embracing imperfections can help achieve the authentic, spontaneous feel that defines Cake Like’s music.
