About

Chron Gen is a UK punk band formed in 1977 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Known for their melodic approach to punk, the group originally comprised Glynn Baxter (guitar, vocals), John Johnson (drums), Pete Dimmock (bass), and Jon Thurlow (rhythm guitar). Initially performing under the name "The Condemned," they gained recognition with their spirited debut EP Puppets Of War. While their early music drew comparisons to the Buzzcocks, Chron Gen carved out their unique niche within the punk scene of the early '80s, aligning them with contemporaries like The Exploited and Vice Squad.

How to Sound Like Chron Gen

Chron Gen's sound is characterized by its energetic and melodic punk style, which balances raw intensity with catchy hooks. To capture their vibe, focus on distorted yet tuneful guitar tones, often achieved through overdrive pedals and tube amplifiers that provide grit while maintaining clarity. The bass lines are driving and rhythmic, anchoring the compositions with a solid punk foundation. Drums play a crucial role in their sound, offering tight, punchy beats that propel the music forward. The band's arrangements often feature simple, direct riffs and fast-paced tempos, reflecting the DIY ethos and rebellious spirit of punk. Musicians seeking to emulate Chron Gen's style should emphasize high-energy performance and straightforward, honest songwriting.
