About

Culture is a seminal reggae group originating from Jamaica, known for their profound influence on the roots reggae genre. Formed in 1976, the group initially consisted of Joseph Hill (lead vocals), Albert Walker (harmony vocals), and Roy "Kenneth" Dayes (harmony vocals). At the heart of their music is a commitment to spiritual, social, and political themes, which Hill, the charismatic leader, conveyed with fervor and intensity. Their debut album, Two Sevens Clash, remains a landmark in reggae history. Following Joseph Hill's passing in 2006, his son Kenyatta Hill took over as lead singer, continuing the legacy of Culture's impactful sound and message.

How to Sound Like Culture

To emulate Culture's distinctive sound, focus on creating a warm, organic reggae vibe infused with spiritual and militant undertones. Their music is characterized by steady, offbeat rhythms typical of reggae, with a tight, syncopated bassline that provides a solid backbone. The guitar work is clean and rhythmic, often utilizing light reverb and delay to add dimension without overwhelming the mix. Keyboards or organs can be used to introduce melodic elements and harmonic texture, while percussion should maintain a steady groove that complements the vocal harmonies. The vocal delivery is passionate and earnest, with rich harmonies that emphasize the lyrical messages. Achieving Culture's sound involves balancing these elements to create music that is both uplifting and thought-provoking.
