About

De Kift is a Dutch band known for their unique blend of fanfare-punk and nederpop. Originating from the Netherlands in 1988, their music is a fusion of poetic lyrics and theatrical flair, often drawing from world literature for their Dutch-language lyrics. The band is a familial ensemble led by Ferry Heijne (vocals, brass), with Pim Heijne (guitar) and Marco Heijne (vocals, percussion, autoharp, steeldrums, keys) also playing significant roles. Although not related, Wim ter Weele (drums) has been a crucial member, contributing to the artistic direction and visual design of their albums. Over the years, De Kift has released multiple studio albums and participated in various collaborative projects across theater and film.

How to Sound Like De Kift

De Kift’s sound is characterized by its energetic and theatrical arrangements, combining the brassy exuberance of a fanfare with the raw edge of punk. Their music often features dynamic brass sections that create a sense of controlled chaos, layered over percussive rhythms that drive the momentum. The use of acoustic and electric guitar textures, often with a gritty, rhythmic feel, complements the bold brass and adds depth to their compositions. The vocals, often delivered with a spoken-word intensity, are crucial in conveying the narrative and emotional weight of their lyrics. Musicians looking to emulate De Kift's sound should focus on achieving a balance between orchestral instrumentation and punk energy, utilizing brass instruments and percussive elements to create a vibrant, yet cohesive musical experience.
