About

DeBarge is an American musical group that emerged from Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1978. Known for their smooth blend of urban contemporary, disco, funk, quiet storm, post-disco, new jack swing, Motown, R&B, and soul, the group originally consisted of siblings Eldra (El) DeBarge (vocals, keyboards), Mark DeBarge (trumpet, saxophone), James DeBarge (keyboards), Randy DeBarge (bass), and Bunny DeBarge (vocals). As protégés under the Motown label, DeBarge garnered fame in the early 1980s with hits that showcased their harmonious vocals and infectious melodies.

How to Sound Like DeBarge

DeBarge's sound is characterized by smooth, melodic arrangements, with a focus on tight vocal harmonies and rhythmic grooves. Their music often features layered keyboard lines and silky bass riffs, creating a rich, full-bodied sound. The rhythmic backbone is marked by funk-influenced bass and drum patterns, which provide a danceable yet relaxed foundation. To capture DeBarge's blend of warmth and clarity, musicians might explore using analog synthesizers for their lush textures and dynamic vocal processing to emulate their polished harmonies. The incorporation of brass and woodwind elements can also add to the depth and vibrant energy that define the group's classic tracks.
