Originating from the vibrant New York music scene in 1978, the group carved out a niche with its fusion of danceable jazz and radical underground sounds. Over the years, the band has seen various lineups but has consistently featured talented musicians who embrace genres like funk rock, jazz funk, and fusion. Despite facing commercial challenges, Defunkt has left an indelible mark with their adventurous approach, releasing numerous influential albums that continue to resonate with fans of genre-bending music.

How to Sound Like Defunkt

Defunkt's sound is characterized by its dynamic, groove-driven energy, which combines bold horn sections with rhythmic, punchy bass lines. The band's sonic palette is both aggressive and melodic, employing a mix of raw brass textures and electric bass tones to create a vibrant, dance-inducing atmosphere. Bassist Melvin Gibbs contributes significantly to this sound with his use of the Tobias Toby Deluxe V Bass and Aria Pro II SB-1000, paired with the powerful Mesa/Boogie Bass 400+ Amp Head to deliver deep, resonant bass that underpins the band’s explosive performances.
