As protégés of Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs, Funkdoobiest quickly made a name for themselves within the Soul Assassins crew, which included acts like Cypress Hill and House of Pain. The group debuted with their album Which Doobie U B? in 1993 and continued to cultivate a cult following with subsequent releases, even as they evolved into a duo after Tomahawk Funk's departure.
