About
Hem is a New York-based folk and country ensemble renowned for their lush, orchestral sound and heartfelt storytelling. Formed in 1999, the group was spearheaded by Dan Messe (songwriter) and Gary Maurer (producer/engineer), with Steve Curtis (guitar, mandolin) adding to the instrumental richness. The band is fronted by Sally Ellyson (vocals), whose soothing voice became the centerpiece after an unexpected audition tape caught Messe's attention. Hem's music is known for its blend of traditional American roots with contemporary stylings, creating a timeless auditory experience.
How to Sound Like Hem
Hem's sonic landscape is defined by its rich, acoustic textures and gentle, melodic flow. Their music often features traditional instrumentation, such as acoustic guitars and mandolins, paired with orchestral elements that provide a warm, enveloping sound. To emulate their style, musicians might focus on the natural resonance of an acoustic guitar, akin to the Guild M-120, to capture the earthy tones present in Hem's recordings. The organic ambiance of their music is further enhanced by the use of minimal processing and analog recording techniques, allowing the raw beauty of each instrument and Ellyson's voice to shine through. This approach results in a sound that feels both intimate and expansive, drawing the listener into a serene, reflective space.
