About
Kenickie was a dynamic British band that emerged from Sunderland, England, in the mid-1990s, blending elements of rock, alternative rock, Britpop, dream pop, riot grrrl, and punk. Formed in 1994 by schoolmates Lauren Laverne (vocals, guitar), Marie Du Santiago (guitar), and Emmy-Kate Montrose (bass), the band later recruited Johnny X (drums). Kenickie was known for their energetic and somewhat bratty take on the riot grrrl aesthetic, garnering a cult following with their invigorating sound and infectious punk-pop melodies. Their debut album, At the Club, released in 1997, showcased their vibrant musical style and contributed to their status as a notable act within the UK indie scene.
How to Sound Like Kenickie
Kenickie's sound is characterized by its energetic, raw, and slightly rebellious edge, blending catchy pop melodies with the gritty undertones of punk and indie rock. Their music often features jangly, distorted guitar riffs and driving bass lines that create a sense of urgency and youthful exuberance. To capture Kenickie's vibe, musicians might focus on using overdrive and fuzz pedals to add a gritty texture to the guitars, while dynamic, punchy drum patterns maintain the high energy of their tracks. Vocals are typically upfront in the mix, with a playful yet assertive delivery that complements the band's lively instrumentals. Emphasizing a lo-fi, DIY production approach can help emulate the authentic feel of Kenickie's spirited sound.
