About

Kortatu was a pioneering Basque ska punk band formed in 1984 in Irun, Spain. The group consisted of Fermín Muguruza (vocals, guitar), Iñigo Muguruza (bass), and Treku Armendariz (drums). Known for their politically charged lyrics and energetic performances, Kortatu became one of the most influential bands in the Basque radical rock scene. Their music merges ska and punk elements, characterized by fast-paced rhythms and a rebellious spirit. Kortatu's work is celebrated for its raw energy and its role in shaping the Basque punk movement.

How to Sound Like Kortatu

Kortatu's sound is defined by its raucous, high-energy blend of ska rhythms and punk aggression. The band's music is both melodic and gritty, often featuring brisk, distorted guitar riffs that drive their compositions with an urgent intensity. Fermín Muguruza’s use of a Fender Telecaster American Vintage 52' captures this balance, delivering bright, punchy tones that cut through the mix. The bass lines are bold and assertive, complementing the frenetic drum patterns that provide a relentless pulse. Kortatu’s sound thrives on its raw, unpolished edge, making distortion pedals and straightforward amp settings essential for replicating their vigorous style.
