About
Main Source is a pioneering hip hop group known for their influential role in the early 1990s East Coast hip hop scene. Formed in 1989, the group originally consisted of Large Professor (MC and producer), K-Cut (DJ and producer), and Sir Scratch (DJ and producer). Hailing from New York, Main Source is celebrated for their innovative production techniques and impactful lyrics, particularly on their classic debut album Breaking Atoms. Following Large Professor's departure due to financial disagreements, K-Cut and Sir Scratch continued the group with the addition of Mikey D (MC), releasing the album F*ck What You Think in 1994. Main Source's music is characterized by its boom bap beats and old school hip hop aesthetic, leaving a lasting legacy in the genre.
How to Sound Like Main Source
Main Source's sound is defined by its intricate sampling and gritty, yet polished beats. Their production style often features the use of vintage samplers and drum machines, which contribute to their raw, yet sophisticated sonic character. The E-mu SP-1200 and the Akai S950 MIDI Digital Sampler played crucial roles in shaping their tracks, providing the textured layers and punchy rhythms that are emblematic of their music. The use of samples from jazz, soul, and funk records gives their tracks a rich, organic feel, while Large Professor's lyrical prowess adds a dynamic, narrative-driven element to their compositions. Their approach to crafting beats and rhymes set a benchmark for the integration of storytelling with intricate production in hip hop.
