New Edition is an iconic American music group that emerged from the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Formed in 1978, the group originally consisted of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe, who were later joined by Johnny Gill. Known for pioneering the New jack swing genre, New Edition seamlessly blended elements of pop, contemporary R&B, and teen pop, which positioned them as forerunners of the modern boy band movement. Their early work was heavily inspired by the Jackson 5, but as they matured, they became instrumental in shaping the fusion of hip-hop and R&B.
