About
Novastar is a Belgian rock band, widely recognized for their lush and emotive sound that bridges alternative rock, pop rock, and indie pop. Fronted by Joost Zweegers (vocals, guitar), the band has gained significant acclaim throughout Belgium and the Netherlands. Originating from the success of Zweegers’ earlier indie rock endeavors, Novastar emerged victorious in the Belgian talent competition Humo's Rock Rally in 1996, setting the stage for their future achievements. Over the years, the lineup has included talented musicians such as Lars Van Bambost (guitar), Jang Coenen (bass), and drummers Cathy-Ann Van Volsem and Karel de Backer. Their debut album, released in 2000, reached number one on the Flemish charts, establishing Novastar as a staple in the Belgian music scene.
How to Sound Like Novastar
Novastar's sound is characterized by its rich, emotive textures and melodic depth, often achieved through the use of clean guitar tones and warm, resonant vocals. The use of analog delay pedals and reverb effects contributes to their expansive, atmospheric quality, creating a sound that is both dreamy and introspective. This is complemented by layered guitar arrangements that often feature subtle modulation effects, adding to the complexity and richness of their music. The bass lines provide a smooth, grounding presence, while the drums maintain a dynamic yet understated rhythm, allowing the emotive qualities of the melodies to shine through. For musicians aiming to emulate Novastar's sound, focusing on creating a balance between lush sonic layers and clear, expressive vocals will be key.
