About
Odd Future, short for Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, is a Los Angeles-based musical collective known for their eclectic mix of hip hop, electronica, contemporary R&B, and alternative hip hop. Formed in 2007 by a group of young, visionary artists, Odd Future's founding members include Tyler, The Creator (rapper, producer), Earl Sweatshirt (rapper), Mike G (rapper), Left Brain (producer), and Hodgy Beats (rapper). The collective also features contributions from Taco, Matt Martians, Domo Genesis, Syd, and Jasper the Dolphin. They quickly gained attention for their raw humor and controversial themes, building a significant underground following and drawing comparisons to a younger, more rebellious Wu-Tang Clan.
How to Sound Like Odd Future
Odd Future's sound is characterized by gritty, experimental production that combines elements of aggressive rap and atmospheric electronica. Their music often features dark, lo-fi beats and intricate sampling, creating a raw and edgy auditory experience. Key to their sonic palette is the use of tools like the M-Audio Keystation 49es MIDI Controller, which aids in crafting their unique, synth-driven soundscapes. Tyler, The Creator's use of Avid Pro Tools and the Yamaha NS-10M further shapes their recordings with a polished yet unrefined edge, allowing their music to maintain a dynamic and immersive feel. The collective's tracks often feature heavy bass, distorted melodies, and unpredictable shifts in tempo and mood, embodying a fearless and innovative approach to hip hop production.
