About
Pentangle is a British folk group renowned for their innovative blend of folk rock, psychedelic folk, and traditional British folk. Formed in London during the late 1960s, the group features an impressive lineup of musicians: Bert Jansch (guitar, vocals) and John Renbourn (guitar, vocals), both celebrated for their virtuosic guitar work and established presence on the folk circuit. Joining them are Jacqui McShee (vocals), whose clear and evocative voice became a hallmark of the genre, Danny Thompson (double bass), grounding the band with jazz-influenced rhythms, and Terry Cox (drums), who brought a subtle yet dynamic percussion style. Together, Pentangle created a soundscape that drew audiences from both the folk and rock worlds, weaving together a rich repertoire of traditional ballads, jazz, blues, and pop.
How to Sound Like Pentangle
Pentangle's sound is characterized by its intricate acoustic guitar interplay and clear, resonant vocals, creating a texture that is both earthy and ethereal. Their music often features complex fingerstyle guitar techniques, which are beautifully executed on instruments like the Fender Montara and Yamaha FG1500. The band's sonic palette is further enriched by warm, woody tones from Thompson's double bass and delicate, jazz-influenced drumming. To emulate their lush, organic sound, musicians might focus on using acoustic guitars with articulate, bright strings, such as the Martin Darco 80/20 Bronze Light Gauge Strings (.012-.054), and embrace the subtle interplay of traditional folk melodies with jazz and blues influences.
