About

Portico is a London-based musical group known for their evocative blend of downtempo, rock, and ambient influences. Formed in 2014, the group emerged from the dissolution of the Mercury Prize-nominated Portico Quartet, with members Duncan Bellamy (drums, electronics), Milo Fitzpatrick (bass, electronics), and Jack Wyllie (saxophone, electronics). The trio shifted from their jazz roots to craft a sound characterized by hallucinatory sonics and field recordings, creating an immersive listening experience. Their debut album, Living Fields, released under the Ninja Tune label, showcased collaborations with artists like Jono McCleery, Jamie Woon, and alt-J's Joe Newman.

How to Sound Like Portico

Portico's sound is defined by its textural depth and atmospheric layers, achieved through a combination of electronic and acoustic elements. Their music often features lush, ambient soundscapes created by blending analog and digital synths with processed field recordings. The use of electronic drums and deep, resonant bass lines provides a rhythmic foundation that is both hypnotic and grounding. Saxophone and other wind instruments contribute melodic, ethereal lines that float above the mix, often enriched with reverb and delay effects to enhance their spacious quality. For musicians looking to emulate Portico's style, focusing on rich, evolving textures and subtle dynamic shifts is key, alongside the integration of ambient effects and electronic manipulation to craft an immersive sonic environment.
