About

Rare Silk was an American vocal jazz group known for their innovative harmonies and eclectic repertoire that captured the spirit of the swing era while infusing it with contemporary jazz influences. Formed in Boulder, Colorado, the group originally consisted of sisters Gaile and Marylynn Gillaspie and Marguerite Juenemann, with the later addition of male vocalist Todd Buffa. Their unique blend of voices drew inspiration from ensembles like The Andrews Sisters, yet they modernized their sound with cutting-edge jazz elements, leading to critical acclaim and performances with legends such as Benny Goodman. Rare Silk's debut album, New Weave, featured collaborations with renowned artists like Michael and Randy Brecker, achieving notable success on Billboard’s Jazz Albums chart and earning Grammy nominations. Over the years, the group evolved with the inclusion of vocalists Barbara Reeves and Jamie Broumas, continuing to captivate audiences until their disbandment in 1988.

How to Sound Like Rare Silk

To emulate Rare Silk's vocal jazz sound, focus on achieving a clean and precise blend of voices, characterized by tight harmonies and dynamic vocal interplay. Their arrangements often emphasize complex harmonic structures and rhythmic precision, requiring attention to vocal texture and timing. Musicians can aim to capture this vibe by studying vocal jazz techniques and experimenting with live vocal arrangements that allow each part to shine while maintaining cohesion. The use of microphones with excellent clarity and warmth can help replicate the group's studio sound, while studio effects such as subtle reverb and delay may be employed to add depth without overshadowing the intricate vocal work. Emphasizing the natural timbre and resonance of each voice will be crucial for performers aspiring to echo Rare Silk’s sophisticated and engaging jazz style.
