About

Reckless Kelly is an Americana and outlaw country band formed in 1996, known for their gritty fusion of rock and country music that resonates deeply with the roots rock and Texas country scenes. Originating from Idaho and subsequently planting their musical roots in Austin, Texas, the group is spearheaded by brothers Willy Braun (vocals, guitar) and Cody Braun (vocals, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica). Joining them are Jay Nazz (drums), Joe Miller (bass), and Geoff Queen (lead guitar, pedal steel), creating a dynamic lineup that has left a significant mark on the Americana landscape. Their evolution over nearly three decades has been marked by accolades such as a GRAMMY Award, and they continue to draw audiences with their raw, heartfelt performances.

How to Sound Like Reckless Kelly

Reckless Kelly's sound is a compelling blend of rugged, melodic storytelling and energetic rock-infused country rhythms. The band's sonic character is both earthy and vibrant, with rich, layered instrumentation that combines the twang of pedal steel and fiddle with the robust drive of electric guitars. Emphasizing a balance of clean and overdriven tones, Willy Braun's use of the Gretsch Duo Jet Electric Guitar and Gibson J-160E creates a textured backdrop that is both traditional and modern. Their music often features warm, tube-driven amplifiers, like the Bad Cat Amps Luca 40 Head, which add a classic rock warmth and depth to their live and recorded soundscapes. The result is a sound that is distinctly American in its roots, yet innovative in its execution, inviting musicians to explore a blend of tradition and edge.
