About

Rogue Traders is an Australian electro-rock band blending elements of dance rock, pop, and dance music. The group was initially formed in the early 2000s by James Ash (keyboards) and Steve Davis, longtime friends and collaborators who previously found success under the moniker Union State. The lineup evolved with the addition of Natalie Bassingthwaighte (vocals), known for her charismatic performances, as well as Tim Henwood (guitar) and Cameron McGlinchey (drums), creating a dynamic live presence. Renowned for their energetic reimagining of INXS's "Need You Tonight" into "One of My Kind," the band has left a significant mark on the Australian music scene.

How to Sound Like Rogue Traders

To emulate the vibrant and electrifying sound of Rogue Traders, musicians should focus on a fusion of pulsating electronic beats and rock-driven energy. Their sonic character often merges crisp, rhythmic guitar riffs with synthesizer textures that deliver a danceable yet edgy vibe. Utilize drum machines or sequencers to achieve precise, danceable rhythms, while incorporating live drums to add a rock edge to the mix. Synths and keyboards can be used to layer melodic lines and ambient washes, creating depth and movement within the tracks. For a live setup, a combination of analog and digital effects can add richness to guitar tones, and a powerful vocal presence will capture the group’s dynamic essence.
