About
Soul II Soul is a British musical collective that emerged from the vibrant London sound system scene in the late 1980s. Pioneered by Jazzie B (Trevor Beresford Romeo), who serves as the group's producer, songwriter, and occasional vocalist, and Daddae Harvey (Philip Harvey), Soul II Soul is celebrated for its seamless fusion of dance-pop, hip house, contemporary R&B, and British soul. The collective gained international acclaim with hits like "Keep On Movin'" and "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)," both featuring the soulful voice of Caron Wheeler. Known for their multicultural and positive philosophy, the group has left a lasting impression with their eclectic sound that blends elements of funk, quiet storm, post-disco, and new jack swing.
How to Sound Like Soul II Soul
Soul II Soul's sound is characterized by a smooth, rhythmic blend of grooves that draws heavily from the essence of both hip-hop and house music, creating an elegant yet danceable vibe. Their music often features silken vocal lines supported by lush, layered instrumentation, which is both melodic and rhythmic in nature. The group's ability to synthesize electronic and organic textures is partly achieved through the use of vintage synths and drum machines. Nellee Hooper, a significant contributor to their sound, utilized gear such as the Lovetone Meatball for filter effects, adding a dynamic, expressive layer to their tracks. The use of equipment like the Lovetone Wobulator tremolo pedal further enhances their sound with its modulating depth, giving tracks a unique pulse that complements the group's engaging, multicultural ethos.
