About

Special Duties is a British hardcore punk band originating from Colchester, Essex, formed in 1977. Initially brought together by Steve Arrogant (vocals) and Steve Duty (bass, later lead vocals), they were soon joined by Bart (guitar) and Stu (drums). The lineup saw Steve Duty transitioning to lead singer in 2012, with Dave joining on bass in 2013. Known for their raw, energetic sound and rebellious spirit, Special Duties has played a significant role in the punk scene, known for their anthemic and confrontational tracks that encapsulate the essence of punk culture.

How to Sound Like Special Duties

Special Duties' sonic character is unmistakably aggressive and raw, characterized by fast, driving rhythms and gritty, distorted guitar tones. Their music often features powerful, unrefined vocal delivery paired with hard-hitting, straightforward drumming that emphasizes speed and intensity. To capture their sound, musicians should focus on cranked-up distortion, possibly using overdrive pedals to push tube amps for that classic punk edge. The guitars should deliver a punchy, mid-range-heavy tone, while bass lines remain tight and propulsive, syncing closely with the drums to create a relentless rhythmic force. The production is typically dry and unembellished, favoring a live, unpolished feel that mirrors the chaotic energy of their performances.
