About
StarSystems is a Scottish instrumental progressive rock project helmed by guitarist and producer Joseph Stevenson. Originating from Stevenson’s bedroom studio in 2013, StarSystems merges elements of progressive rock, progressive metal, electronic rock, and math rock to craft a sound that is both intricate and expansive. Inspired by luminaries such as Dream Theater, Plini, and David Maxim Micic, the project's compositions are a blend of expressive guitar lines, complex rhythms, and lush electronic textures. Over the years, StarSystems has collaborated with notable artists like Dream Theater’s Jordan Rudess and Sithu Aye, contributing to its rich and varied musical landscape.
How to Sound Like StarSystems
StarSystems' sonic character is defined by its clean yet powerful guitar tones, which are often layered with intricate solos and colorful chord progressions. To capture this sound, musicians should focus on dynamic guitar playing that combines both technical prowess and melodic sensibility. The use of analog delay pedals and modulation effects can help achieve the project's signature depth and texture. Additionally, tube amps can provide the necessary warmth and presence, while digital effects units might be employed to add electronic layers that complement the organic instrumentation. The music thrives on a balance of precision and emotion, where complex rhythms are interwoven with soaring, lyrical melodies, creating a soundscape that is both challenging and captivating.
