About
State Radio is a dynamic Boston-based trio known for their potent blend of reggae rock and east coast reggae, infused with socially conscious lyrics and a punk edge. Formed in 2002 by Chad Urmston (vocals, guitar), a former member of the band Dispatch, State Radio also features Chuck Fay (bass) and Mike Najarian (drums). The group has cultivated a dedicated following with their energetic performances and politically charged themes, which are as much a hallmark of their music as their rich, rhythmic soundscapes.
How to Sound Like State Radio
State Radio's sound is characterized by its raw, rhythmic energy and reggae-infused grooves. The band's music often features driving guitar riffs and propulsive bass lines, creating a sound that is both gritty and melodic. Urmston's use of guitars such as the Custom Creston Guitar and the 1958 Gibson Les Paul Jr. gives their sound a distinctive, vintage warmth, while Fay's bass work, sometimes enhanced with the Fulltone Bass-Drive Mosfet, adds depth and punch. The interplay of these elements, combined with Najarian's dynamic drumming, results in a sound that is both earthy and vibrant, perfect for musicians looking to capture a similar blend of intensity and melodic flow.
