About

Steep Canyon Rangers is a dynamic bluegrass group hailing from North Carolina, known for their innovative blend of traditional and progressive bluegrass, Americana, and newgrass. Formed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1999, the band originally consisted of Woody Platt (guitar, lead vocals), Graham Sharp (banjo, harmony vocals), Charles R. Humphrey III (bass, harmony vocals), with Mike Guggino (mandolin) joining soon after. The lineup was solidified with the addition of Nicky Sanders (fiddle). Over the years, the Steep Canyon Rangers have captivated audiences with their unique sound, which balances old-time bluegrass roots with contemporary flair. They gained significant attention through their collaboration with actor and banjo player Steve Martin, and have since continued to evolve, incorporating elements of soul and R&B into their music.

How to Sound Like Steep Canyon Rangers

The Steep Canyon Rangers' sound is characterized by its lively and intricate acoustic textures, drawing from both the rich tradition of bluegrass and more modern influences. Their music is marked by crisp, melodic string arrangements, where the interplay between the banjo, fiddle, and mandolin creates a vibrant sonic tapestry. This is often complemented by the rich, resonant tones of Woody Platt's Collings D2H acoustic guitar, which provides a warm and articulate foundation. The band's dynamic range allows them to seamlessly shift from energetic, foot-tapping numbers to more introspective and soulful pieces. The precision and clarity of their acoustic instruments are further enhanced by the use of high-quality mics and stage setups that capture the nuances of their performance, ensuring a balanced and immersive listening experience.
