About

Straitjacket Fits is a pioneering jangle pop band hailing from New Zealand, known for their energetic guitar-driven sound and incisive songwriting. The group was formed in 1986 and originally comprised Shayne Carter (vocals, guitar), John Collie (drums), David Wood (bass), and later joined by Andrew Brough (guitar, vocals). Following Brough’s departure, Mark Peterson (guitar) stepped in to continue the band's legacy. Straitjacket Fits gained acclaim for their debut EP Life in One Chord and albums like Hail and Melt, which showcased their knack for blending melody with a gritty edge.

How to Sound Like Straitjacket Fits

Straitjacket Fits' sound is characterized by jangly, overdriven guitar riffs that create a textured yet raw sonic landscape. Their music often features layered, harmonic vocals set against a backdrop of crisp, rhythmic drumming and driving bass lines. To capture their distinctive vibe, musicians might employ guitar effects like chorus and overdrive, which are essential for achieving the shimmering yet punchy tone synonymous with the jangle pop genre. Tube amplifiers would provide the necessary warmth and edge, while maintaining clarity and definition. The band's arrangements balance melodic hooks with dynamic shifts, making careful attention to song structure and interplay between instruments crucial for emulating their impactful sound.
