About

Sumo was a pioneering force in the Latin rock scene, known for their eclectic blend of Rock en Español, post-punk, ska, and reggae. Formed in the mid-1980s in Argentina, the group was led by the charismatic Italian frontman Luca Prodan. The lineup included Germán Daffunchio (guitar), Diego Arnedo (bass), Alejandro Sokol (drums, after the departure of Stephanie Nuttal due to geopolitical tensions), and Roberto Pettinato (saxophone). Sumo's music broke new ground in the Argentine rock landscape, with albums like Divididos Por La Felicidad and Llegando Los Monos making significant waves in the local charts, and songs like "La Rubia Tarada" becoming anthems of the era. The untimely death of Prodan in 1987 marked the end of the band, but their legacy continues to influence generations of Latin rock musicians.

How to Sound Like Sumo

Sumo's sound is a dynamic fusion of energetic punk rhythms, reggae grooves, and gritty rock textures. Their music often features punchy, rhythmic guitar lines and driving bass riffs, creating a vibrant yet raw sonic landscape. Luca Prodan's distinctive vocal delivery was often accompanied by the saxophone's edgy, melodic lines, adding an unusual and appealing layer to their tracks. Key to their sound was the use of vintage-style gear, such as the Argie Dolly overdrive pedal used by Ricardo Mollo, which contributed to the band's robust and raunchy guitar tones. The Ampeg SVT-CL Classic bass amp used by Diego Arnedo provided the deep, resonant lows essential for their reggae-influenced tracks. Together, these elements created a sound that was both innovative and deeply rooted in raw, emotive expression, capturing the turbulent spirit of 1980s Argentina.
