About

Sweeping Promises is an American post-punk and indie rock duo formed by Lira Mondal (bass, vocals) and Caufield Schnug (guitar). Emerging from the U.S. DIY underground, the band is known for a lean, nervy approach that pulls from new wave, egg punk, and minimalist punk as much as classic post-punk. Their songs pair taut basslines, wiry guitar parts, and sharp, chant-like vocals with a stripped-down recording style that keeps the music tense, immediate, and rhythmically locked in.

How to Sound Like Sweeping Promises

To get close to Sweeping Promises’ sound, think dry, clipped, and urgent rather than huge or heavily layered. The bass often does the melodic heavy lifting, sitting high in the mix with a percussive, driving attack, while the guitar favors thin, angular lines over thick distortion or sustained chords. Drums should feel tight, repetitive, and motorik-adjacent, pushing momentum without sounding overly polished. Vocals work best with a direct, slightly detached delivery that still feels insistent. Production-wise, avoid excessive ambience: a compact room sound, restrained reverb, and punchy midrange will suit the band’s wiry, DIY character far better than lush atmospherics or oversized modern rock tones.
