About
Tarkio was an American alternative country band formed in 1996 in Missoula, Montana. The group comprised Colin Meloy (vocals, guitar), Gibson Hartwell (guitar), Louis Stein (bass), Brian Collins (drums), and Kevin Suggs (pedal steel guitar). Known for their fusion of alternative country with elements of Americanized Brit-pop, Tarkio drew inspiration from the likes of The Go-Betweens, The Waterboys, and R.E.M. Though their time together was brief, ending in 1999, their music left a lasting impression, particularly through their full-length album I Guess I Was Hoping for Something More and the EP Sea Songs for Landlocked Sailors.
How to Sound Like Tarkio
Tarkio’s sound is characterized by a melodic and heartfelt blend of alt-country twang and indie rock sensibilities. Their music often features the warm, resonant tones of Colin Meloy's guitars, which range from the rich, acoustic depth of the Martin 000-17SM to the electric vibrancy of the Gretsch 6120N New Nashville. Meloy's use of a ZVEX Vexter Box of Rock adds a subtle edge to their otherwise lush and nostalgic sound, complementing the pedal steel flourishes that imbue their tracks with a sense of longing and Americana. The organic interplay between acoustic and electric textures helps capture a vibe that is both introspective and expansive, making Tarkio’s music resonate with emotion and authenticity.
