About

Teenage Head is a Canadian band originating from Hamilton, Ontario, formed in 1976 by high school friends Frank Kerr (vocals), who went by the stage name Frankie Venom, and Gord Lewis (guitar). They were later joined by classmates Steve Mahon (bass) and Nick Stipanitz (drums). Known for their energetic blend of power pop and proto-punk, Teenage Head drew inspiration from early rock & roll and the punk scene of the late '70s, often compared to bands like the Ramones. Their music is characterized by its unpretentious celebration of classic rock themes such as teenage rebellion, cars, and partying. Despite challenges, including a notorious riot and a car crash, the band remains a beloved staple in the Canadian rock scene, particularly recognized for their lively performances and raw sound.

How to Sound Like Teenage Head

To capture the sound of Teenage Head, focus on achieving a raw, energetic vibe that blends punk's aggressive edge with the melodicism of early rock & roll. Guitars should have a gritty, overdriven tone, typically achieved through tube amps that add natural warmth and distortion. For the guitar work, consider using simple, catchy riffs and power chords, with a hint of rockabilly influence, to emulate their style. The bass should be punchy and driving, providing a rhythmic foundation that propels the music forward. Drums should maintain a straightforward, upbeat tempo, reflecting the band's party-centric themes. Overall, the sound is best characterized as high-energy and slightly raw, capturing the essence of a live garage band performance.
