About

The Advantage is an American band known for their unique blend of math rock and nintendocore, a genre characterized by rock interpretations of classic video game music. Originating from Nevada City, California, the group was formed when drummer Spencer Seim joined forces with high-school friends Carson McWhirter (bass), Ben Milner (guitar), and Nick Rogers (guitar). After Rogers' departure, Robby Moncrieff joined on guitar. The band gained a cult following with their energetic covers of 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) soundtracks, releasing albums through Kill Rock Stars affiliate 5 Rue Christine.

How to Sound Like The Advantage

The Advantage's sound is a vibrant collage of crisp, intricate guitar riffs interwoven with dynamic, rhythmically complex drumming, capturing the pixelated spirit of NES compositions. Their guitar work, often using instruments like the Scott French SF3 and Series 10 Telecaster Copy, is both melodic and angular, channeling the chiptune melodies into the realm of live rock. The use of a Marshall JCM800 2203 amplifier head provides a rich, powerful tone that enhances the band's energetic performances. This combination of gear and stylistic choices results in a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking, appealing to gamers and rock enthusiasts alike.
