About

The Blue Hawaiians are an L.A.-based group known for their intriguing blend of surf rock and exotica. Formed in 1994, the band consists of Mark Fontana (bass, vocals), Mark Sproull (guitar), Bron Tieman (guitar), Tom Maxwell (drums), Gary Brandin (guitar), and Eric Godal (keyboards). They initially came together to perform at a friend's nightclub opening, but their unique sound quickly captured the attention of L.A. hipsters and even filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. Over the years, they have become a staple in the Los Angeles music scene, gracing legendary venues such as the Viper Room and the Hollywood Palladium.

How to Sound Like The Blue Hawaiians

The Blue Hawaiians' sound is characterized by lush, atmospheric guitar tones that evoke the cinematic feel of a noir film, seamlessly blending with the retro allure of exotica. Their music often features reverberant, twangy guitars, achieved through the use of instruments like the Fender Jaguar and the Fender Stringmaster Dual 6 Console Steel Guitar. This combination delivers a rich, layered sound with a slightly dark edge that is both nostalgic and captivating. The band's use of vintage-inspired effects creates a dreamy yet slightly eerie vibe, while the rhythm section provides a steady surf rock groove that anchors their exotic melodies and lush arrangements.
