About
The Cascades are a vocal group originating from San Diego, known for their melodic blend of doo-wop, Gothic rock, brill building pop, rock-and-roll, and adult standards. Formed in the early 1960s, the group consisted of John Gummoe (guitarist/lead singer), Eddy Snyder, David Stevens, David Wilson, and David Szabo. They achieved fame with their hit "Rhythm of the Rain," which became a Top Ten R&B success in 1963. Despite the group's later efforts with various labels, they never replicated the success of their early hit. The Cascades' music remains a nostalgic reflection of the early '60s pop scene.
How to Sound Like The Cascades
The Cascades' sound is characterized by its light, pop-oriented vocal harmonies underscored by melodic guitar lines and a smooth, rhythmic backdrop. Their music often features clean, reverberant guitar tones, which could be achieved using analog delay pedals and spring reverb units to create a lush, atmospheric feel. The vocal arrangements are the centerpiece, typically layered to produce rich harmonies that convey the emotive qualities of their lyrics. To approximate their style, a musician might focus on creating tight vocal harmonies and gentle, rhythmic guitar accompaniments, paired with subtle percussion that complements rather than dominates the mix. This approach captures the nostalgic and evocative essence of The Cascades' music.
