About

The Ethiopians were a seminal Jamaican vocal group known for their pivotal role in the transition from ska to rocksteady, and later, their influence on the roots reggae genre. Formed in Kingston in 1966, the group was primarily the creative outlet for Leonard Dillon (vocals, songwriter). Initially, the group included Stephen Taylor (vocals) and Aston Morris (vocals, guitar), although Morris left the band by the end of 1966, leaving Dillon and Taylor as a duo. The Ethiopians are celebrated for their socially conscious lyrics, often reflecting Rastafarian themes, and their contributions to defining the sound of early reggae.

How to Sound Like The Ethiopians

To emulate The Ethiopians' sound, focus on capturing the warmth and rhythm typical of early Jamaican music. Their music often features smooth vocal harmonies over a steady, offbeat rhythm, emblematic of rocksteady and reggae styles. The guitar work in their tracks is usually clean and rhythmic, emphasizing the skanking style that defines reggae. Utilizing analog delay and reverb can help recreate the vintage, slightly echoing quality found in their recordings. Drummers should focus on a laid-back yet groovy beat, often accented with rimshots and syncopated hi-hat patterns, while bassists should aim for a deep, rolling bass line that anchors the music. The Ethiopians' sound thrives on simplicity and groove, with a focus on delivering emotionally resonant vocal performances.
