About

The Gizmos are a pioneering band hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, known for their unique blend of power pop, punk, proto-punk, and egg punk. Formed in 1976, the group initially revolved around contributors to the alternative broadsheet fanzine Gulcher. Key members included vocalist ‘Krazy’ Ken Highland, who later left to serve in the US Marines, and Dale Lawrence, a vocalist and guitarist who significantly contributed to the band's later work. Throughout their active years, The Gizmos released a series of EPs, including The Gizmos (1976) and Amerika First (1977), showcasing their irreverent humor and rock-n-roll attitude.

How to Sound Like The Gizmos

The Gizmos' sound is characterized by its raw, energetic punk ethos combined with catchy power pop melodies. Their music often features distorted guitar riffs and driving rhythms, typical of the punk genre, while their use of simple, straightforward song structures ensures an infectious, high-energy vibe. To capture The Gizmos' sound, focus on employing overdriven guitar tones through tube amps to achieve that classic 70s rock grit. The use of basic delay and reverb effects can help add a bit of space to the otherwise dry mix, highlighting their proto-punk roots. A tight, punchy rhythm section is crucial, with bass lines that complement the guitar without overpowering it, and drums that maintain a brisk, relentless pace to propel the music forward.
