About

The Human Abstract is a progressive metal band originating from Los Angeles, California. Known for their complex compositions and virtuosic musicianship, the group was formed in 2004 by Dean Herrera (guitar) and A.J. Minette (guitar, keyboards). They were later joined by Kenny Arehart (bass), Brett Powell (drums), and Nathan Ells (vocals). Over the years, the lineup has seen changes, including the addition of Andrew Tapley (guitar) and Travis Richter (vocals). The Human Abstract's music is a blend of metalcore, progressive metal, mathcore, and djent, drawing inspiration from bands like Rush, Dream Theater, and Between the Buried and Me. Their albums Nocturne, Midheaven, and Digital Veil showcase their intricate arrangements and intellectual themes.

How to Sound Like The Human Abstract

The Human Abstract's sound is characterized by its aggressive yet melodic complexity, blending intricate guitar work with dynamic rhythm changes. The interplay between heavy, distorted riffs and soaring melodic lines creates a unique sonic landscape that is both intense and cerebral. Their use of guitars such as the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay and Gibson Les Paul Special helps achieve a robust, cutting tone that's fundamental to their music. The presence of pedals like the Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer adds a warm, overdriven edge to their riffs, while effects such as the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker contribute to their rich, fuzzy textures. Combining these elements allows The Human Abstract to craft a sound that is both technically demanding and emotionally engaging, appealing to fans of progressive metal and beyond.
