About

The Lonesome Trio is an American bluegrass and newgrass band originating from the halls of Oberlin College in Ohio. The group consists of Ed Helms (guitar, vocals), known for his acting career but deeply rooted in music, Ian Riggs (bass, vocals), and Jacob Tilove (mandolin, vocals). Together, they craft a sound that melds traditional bluegrass with contemporary flair. The Lonesome Trio began their journey as Weedkiller and later evolved into their current form, gaining recognition with performances at renowned festivals like Bonnaroo and Newport Folk Festival.

How to Sound Like The Lonesome Trio

The Lonesome Trio's sound is characterized by its acoustic warmth and intricate string arrangements, balancing the traditional and the modern. Their music features crisp and bright mandolin tones, paired with the rich, resonant timbre of steel-string acoustic guitars, such as the Gibson Nouveau used by Helms. The band’s arrangements are melodically driven, with a dynamic interplay between the mandolin and guitar, grounded by the steady, rhythmic pulse of the upright bass. This blend of instruments creates a sound that is both earthy and sophisticated, inviting listeners into a vibrant acoustic landscape.
