About

The Montgomery Brothers were a renowned jazz group celebrated for their contributions to the genres of jazz, cool jazz, bebop, and hard bop. Originating from Indianapolis, Indiana, the group was composed of the talented Montgomery siblings: Wes Montgomery (guitar), Monk Montgomery (bass), and Buddy Montgomery (piano and vibraphone). They were active primarily during the late 1950s and early 1960s, with each member bringing a unique flair and expertise to the ensemble. Wes Montgomery, in particular, is often hailed as one of the greatest jazz guitarists, known for his innovative use of the thumb instead of a pick, which contributed to his distinct sound.

How to Sound Like The Montgomery Brothers

The Montgomery Brothers' sound is characterized by warm, melodic guitar lines, rhythmic bass grooves, and soulful piano and vibraphone harmonies. Wes Montgomery's guitar tone, often clean and resonant, was typically achieved using his Gibson ES-175 Electric Guitar or the Gibson L-5 CES EB, paired with the rich, tube-driven sounds of an Ampeg Gemini II G-15 or a Fender '65 Twin Reverb. This combination allowed for a warm, articulate tone that blended seamlessly with Monk's pioneering electric bass lines and Buddy's expressive piano chords. Their music encapsulated the essence of jazz's golden era, with a sound that was both sophisticated and deeply emotive, making use of intricate improvisations and dynamic interplay among the brothers.
