About

The Morning Benders was an indie rock band known for their blend of sunny pop songcraft and jangling guitars, drawing influences from artists like The Shins and Brian Wilson. Formed in Berkeley, California, in 2005, the group was initially a solo project by frontman Chris Chu (vocals, guitar, production). He later expanded the lineup to include his UC Berkeley classmates: Julian Harmon (drums), Tim Or (bass), and Joe Ferrell (guitar, organ). The band released several EPs and albums, with their full-length debut Talking Through Tin Cans arriving in 2008. They gained further attention with their 2010 album Big Echo, which featured a more experimental sound co-produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor. The Morning Benders eventually changed their name to Pop Etc in 2012.

How to Sound Like The Morning Benders

The Morning Benders' sound is characterized by bright, jangly guitar tones that capture a nostalgic yet modern indie rock vibe. Their music often features crisp, melodic guitar lines layered with subtle reverb and delay, creating an airy and expansive sonic landscape. The band's rhythm section favors a clean, straightforward approach, with bass and drums providing a steady, unobtrusive foundation that supports the melodic elements. Vocals are typically warm and inviting, with harmonies that enhance the pop sensibility of their music. To emulate their sound, musicians can focus on using clean amplification and modulation effects to achieve a similar blend of vintage warmth and contemporary clarity.
