About

Timbalada is a vibrant Brazilian musical group known for its dynamic fusion of pagode, axé, samba reggae, and pagode baiano. Formed in 1992 by Carlinhos Brown in the Candeal borough of Salvador, Bahia, Timbalada is distinguished by its unique use of the timbau, a drum indigenous to candomblé religions, alongside an array of vocalists and instrumentalists. The band’s lineup is a rich tapestry of three singers, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, and a diverse percussive section featuring ten timbaus and an Afro drumset known as the "percuteria". Timbalada is not only a band but also a Carnaval bloco, known for its energetic performances and the striking body painting of its members, which reflects a blend of tribal and industrial aesthetics.

How to Sound Like Timbalada

To capture the sound of Timbalada, musicians should focus on creating a percussive and rhythmically complex sonic landscape. The group's music thrives on a dense, layered approach where percussion takes center stage, with the timbau and other drums providing a driving, danceable groove. The brass section adds a bright, punchy character, while the keyboards and guitars offer harmonic support with rhythmic stabs and melodic riffs. Timbalada's music is characterized by its lively, celebratory vibe, achieved through the use of syncopated rhythms and call-and-response vocals. To emulate their style, musicians should prioritize dynamic percussion arrangements and energetic, interactive vocal lines, complemented by a colorful brass section and a propulsive bassline that ties everything together.
