About
Ton Steine Scherben were a German rock band formed in Berlin in 1970, widely regarded as one of the country’s first truly homegrown rock groups. The classic lineup featured Rio Reiser (vocals, guitar), R.P.S. Lanrue (guitar), Kai Sichtermann (bass), Wolfgang “Funky” Götzner (drums), and at points Martin Paul (keyboards). Their music bridged rock, krautrock, proto-punk, and early Neue Deutsche Welle, pairing raw, direct band playing with politically charged lyrics and a distinctly German identity.
